• CEUs

Why do I need CEUs?: Certified teachers that hold a Continuing Professional License (CPL) need to have CEUs in order to renew their license every five years. The educator must earn eight continuing education credits (CEUs) that apply to the licensure field and the professional duties of the licensee.

Who needs CEUs?: The only teachers that need to record and keep track of their CEUs are those that hold a Continuing Professional License (CPL). Teachers that hold a Permit to Teach (PTT), Emergency License (EL), Residency License (RL), Limited License (LL), or Initial Professional License (IPL) do not need to meet CEU requirements. While these teachers are still attending and participating in professional development, there is no need for these teachers to closely keep track of the number of CEUs they are earning. However, it is best practice to document and record the professional development that is attended.

Are classified staff members required to earn CEUs?: Classified staff members are not required to earn CEUs. However, in certain positions, specific trainings are required, so it is a good idea to upload the certificates into LINQ so that they are easily accessible if needed and there is a permanent record of attendance.

How are CEUs awarded?: CEU credits are awarded at the rate of .10 CEU for each hour of approved professional development. Therefore, 10 hours of professional development are

needed to equate to 1.0 CEU. A total of 8 CEUs are needed to renew, which equates to 80 clock hours.

What kind of CEUs do I need to renew my license?: The following credits are needed in order to renew your Continuing Professional License (CPL).

    • Grades PreK-6: 3 Literacy, 3 Content, 2 Digital Learning

    • Grades 6-12: 3 Content, 3 General/Other, 2 Digital Learning

    • Administrators: 3 Administration, 3 General/Other, 2 Digital Learning

    • Student Services: 3 Professional Discipline, 3 General/Other, 2 Digital Learning

What activities are accepted for renewal credit?: The following activities are accepted:

    • College or university courses (transcripts are required for documentation)

    • Professional development provided by the school or district

    • Classes, workshops, and conferences approved by the LEA

How do my college courses provide renewal credits?: One semester hour is equivalent to 1.5 CEUs.

How are CEUs tracked?: All CEUs will need to be uploaded into LINQ. Unfortunately NCEES and LINQ do not “talk” to each other. At the end of the school year, it is recommended that certified staff members download their NCEES transcript from the school year and then upload the transcript into their LINQ account. This will allow for combining the CEUs and having them all saved to one location. All outside training, or in district training that you receive a certificate for, must be uploaded into LINQ. For more information on this, please see below.

    • The Friday Institute: These are free online courses through NC State's college of education.

    • North Carolina Virtual Public School: Linked is the course catalog. Look for what you need under the "type" column (DL=digital learning, G=general, etc). These courses are actually self paced courses taken through NCEES. If you find one that you'd like to take, copy and paste the title of it into NCEES under the Professional Development tab. Then click on the title and then click the "start" button.

    • HCS PD Catalog on Canvas: Hoke County Schools has a bunch of items available on the PD catalog on Canvas. Click through the tabs and you'll see all the available options.
