Painting Request and Information
Standardization of Classroom and Office Wall Colors
Purpose
In an effort to promote consistency, maintain visual cleanliness, and reduce long-term maintenance costs, Hoke County Schools will begin implementing a district-wide standard for classroom and office wall paint colors. Moving forward, classroom and office walls in all district-owned facilities are to be painted white.
Rationale
- Neutral wall colors help reflect natural and artificial light, enhancing classroom visibility and reducing energy consumption.
- A uniform color scheme across classrooms supports a calm, focused learning environment and ensures visual consistency.
- Standardizing paint colors across the district streamlines maintenance, simplifies supply management, and helps control repainting costs.
- Neutral backgrounds ensure instructional materials, student work, and safety signage are more visible and effective.
Procedures for Implementation
Effective Date
This practice will take effect beginning June 2025 and will be applied to all painting projects moving forward.
Maintenance and Painting Projects
Any scheduled repainting—whether part of routine maintenance or initiated by special request—must align with the district's approved color palette (white). This requirement also applies to any painting conducted independently by school staff. No alternative colors are to be used on classroom walls without written approval from the Assistant Superintendent of Operations.
Existing Classrooms
Classrooms currently painted in non-standard colors will not be required to change immediately. However, when repainting is needed, the new standard will apply.
Communication to Staff
Administrators should inform staff of this district-wide effort and clarify that personalized painting of classroom walls will not be permitted unless it aligns with the approved standards.
Exceptions
Special use rooms (e.g., sensory rooms, early childhood spaces) may be considered for alternative color use upon request and review by the Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Maintenance Director.
Next Steps
Please communicate this update with your custodial teams and school staff. Should you have classrooms scheduled for repainting this summer or in the upcoming school year, ensure requests align with this guidance.
Questions or requests for exception should be submitted in writing to the Operations Department.
Thank you for your continued leadership and support as we work to provide safe, well-maintained, and welcoming learning environments for all students and staff.
