Dr. Rodney Shotwell Named Interim Superintendent

RAEFORD, N.C. (June 30, 2023) - The Hoke County Board of Education announced during a special called meeting on Friday, June 30 that Dr. Rodney Shotwell would serve as the district’s Interim Superintendent beginning July 1. Dr. Shannon Register has been serving in the position since February 14 after former superintendent, Dr. Debra Dowless resigned. Dr. Register’s contract as Interim ended on June 30.
 
Dr. Shotwell most recently served as Superintendent for Rockingham County Schools from June 2006 until he retired in July 2022. He was also Superintendent of Macon County Schools from July 2001 through May 2006. Dr. Shotwell brings principal, associate principal, teacher, and in-school suspension/ drop-out prevention co-ordinator work experience with him to the interim position. Among his many awards and accolades, most notable is that he was the A. Craig Phillips State Superintendent of the Year in 2015.
 
“We thank Dr. Register for her service during her time as Interim Superintendent,” Board Chair, Angela Southerland said. “And we are excited to have Dr. Shotwell serve in this leadership position during this time of transition.”
 
The Hoke County Board of Education will continue its search for a new, permanent Superintendent.
