The life of a military affiliated student can be filled with the adventure of new places, people, and experiences, but also with the stresses of frequent moves, deployments, separations, and adjustments. Challenges faced by these students can be minimized through the academic and social/emotional support provided in extra-curricular reading programs. Students need the ability to self-select reading materials from a broad range of diverse texts that address academic goals and interests as well as self-help works focused on personal needs and challenges. Activities that facilitate deep connections with text will improve reading comprehension, reading stamina, and encourage positive lifelong reading habits.
